Let’s first start with a brief journey through the bands history, from the very beginning up to now. We started Rock Ignition at the beginning of 2006. When I talk about we, that's me, Heather Shockley and the bass player Jürgen Steinmetz. We both had previous experiences with other bands (Kamelot, Silent Force), but we both dreamt of doing great hard rock music and so we decided to write our very first song and to start looking for other crazy musicians like us. 2007 has been a very good year for us, our EP has received great reviews from all over Europe,USA and even Japan and a lot of people is finally getting to know our music....and they like it!;-)
How did you end up playing exactly this kind of music?
We're all kids from the 80's, so we all loved bands like Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Europe, Aerosmith,Guns n' Roses, Whitesnake... This are our roots, so it came quite natural to want to play hard rock. For us, there's no better music to express our feelings.
….And what is the “secret” behind the band name?
There's no real secret, we just think that Rock Ignition expresses exactly the way we are “driven” by Rock n' Roll. It “ignites”our soul! ;-).
How do a typical song for your band develop from a vague idea to a complete song?
It happens in different ways. Sometimes I'll have a melody in my head or some cool chorus, and then we take the guitar and try to find something that gives life to this idea. Sometimes the guys will come up with some cool riff and then I work on finding some kickass vocal lines.
Sometimes a song can be finished in a couple of hours, and sometimes it can take weeks, but when your baby is finished...you really can't wait for everybody to hear it!
What is your motivation for doing this, and what do you feel that your band has to offer that makes you special?
We love handmade music,we love standing on stage and being 100% true, enthusiastic and passionate about our music. But we, most importantly, also love to be like that “off stage”.It's very important for us not to pretend to be something, but to actually “BE” this something, which I think people are really able to feel, specially in our live shows.
Where does the road go from here, and what is your strategy to build up the bands reputation even further? Never give up wanting to be ourselves. Our style is unique, cause it really reflects our personality and we don't wanna try to be or sound like anybody else. I think this is the only way to make a band really succesfull. And patience. :-)
Tell us a little about the lyrical aspect of your music. Do you consider the lyrics an important part of your music, and what topics do you typically like to write about?
I'm the one writing the lyrics, so of course I find them very important :-). I write about personal experiences, about my relationship with society, about love...just a bit of everything. I don't really like to write about war, or politics, I don't think it fits our music or our mood, life's already sad enough.
Say something about the metal scene in your area, the collaboration with other bands and if are there any restrictions or prejudice against what you are doing in the community around you?
The scene here in Germany is still quite alive. Of course it's hard to convince people that listen to mainstream, to check out something different cause it might be “not only noise”, but I have to say that Rock Ignition had also great reactions from the non-metal scene, so I would say that I don't find a big prejudice, at least talking about the listeners. (record companies are another story);-)
On our EP “I Can't Resist”, we had a couple of collaborations with guitar players from other bands like, Bas Maas from the dutch gothic band After Forever and Dirk Böhmer, ex guitarrist from the german band Jaded Heart.
Let us know about your releases so far (albums, demos). What are your thoughts about releasing a physical product in these days where downloading dominates the music business?
As I said, we have released this year our debut EP “I Can't Resist” with 5 titles. This EP is a little taste of our sound and of all the ideas we had in the past years. We put lots of effort in it and the reaction of the fans and press has been amazing till now! The downloading is quite a sad theme, specially cause I heard lots of people complaining about the prices of the cd's in the stores, when at the same time they are downloading 15 seconds of a ringing tone for 4 euros!I think we really have to spread the word and make the people aware, or this will end up in a bad way.
What bands, artists have served as inspiration for you through the years?
There's really too many of them. Bands like Mr. Big, Little Angels, Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Europe and also great female artists like Lee Aaron, Doro Pesch, Tina Turner. One big name that I think none of us can forget is : Queen
…And finally, where do you see your band in lets say five years from now?
I see Rock Ignition touring the world and playing in big stages! Giving Rock n' Roll back to the audiences and sharing our love for music with them! We're looking forward to meet you all out there!
